About Swallow Birding
On Swallow Birding trips we are enthusiastic, relaxed, friendly and fun. Small groups mean Leader
Steve Grimwade can give the time and attention necessary to make your trip a great birding experience!
Swallow Birding cater for all levels of birding ability from the complete novice through to the
experienced birder.
Birds are our main passion, although we have included a few trips to see butterflies and dragonflies,
which we could not resist!
We have a good selection of tours for 2008:
- Winter Raptors in Sweden
- Wallcreeper Weekends in Southern France
- A day watching raptors in Norfolk
- A weekend trip catching up with seabirds in Pembrokeshire
- Spanish Pyrenees weekend
These are just a few. Something for all tastes - find out more!
The Team
Swallow Birding Leader Steve Grimwade has been birdwatching
for over 25 years. During this time he has visited Spain, Portugal, Sweden, France, Holland, Belgium, Greece,
Israel, Hungary, Corsica and Cyprus in search of birds. He is a well-known birder in Essex having birdwatched
extensively in the county of Essex for over 20 years. Steve has also co-edited the Essex Bird Report,
winning the Best County Bird Report award. He was Art & Photographic Editor on the recently published
A & C Black book The Birds of Essex.
He currently serves on the Essex Birdwatching Society's Executive
Committee as Publicity Officer and also leads their monthly birdwatching field meetings as principal guide.
Steve also led guided walks for the Essex Wildlife Trust for over seven years. As well as birds, Steve also
has an interest in Butterflies, Moths, Wildflowers and Dragonflies.
Annette Adams has been birdwatching for more years than she
cares to mention. She managed the Abberton Reservoir Essex Wildlife Trust Visitor Centre for six years
where she arranged birdwatching minibus trips, birdwatching weekends in the UK and group trips to Europe.
She is currently the Events Organiser for the Essex Birdwatching Society. Annette makes sure everything
runs smoothly on tours and behind the scenes for Swallow Birding.
She also makes a 'mean' fruit cake, a feature on all of our UK day trips.
Due to the overwhelming demand for our trips it is with great pleasure that we welcome Andrew Thompson to the Swallow Birding team. His first bird book was the Observers Book of British Birds which he won in a school fete in 1951 when he was 9 years old, before the Collared Dove had colonised the UK.
Bird watching grew as an interest and over the years he developed a fascination for bird migration and an absolute passion for birds of prey, travelling extensively in Europe in pursuit of both.
He held a BTO ringing permit for over 20 years which allowed him to work at observatories and ringing stations both in the UK and such places as Finland, Israel, Gibraltar and Russia.
His assistance at Swallow Birding is a natural product of the 10 years in which Steve Grimwade and he ran birding trips together for the Essex Wildlife Trust.
Transport
On Swallow Birding day trips, all transport from our base in Colchester to the venue is FREE, all you pay for is the days' guiding.
It is also possible to join a tour at the site by prior
arrangement. For breaks which include flights, our meeting point is at the airport of departure.
For all other breaks, our meeting point will be at the venue,
although we will have several pick up points en route from our base in Colchester, Essex, if
more convenient.
Accommodation
Our selection of Hotels, Inns and Guesthouses have been
specially chosen because they are comfortable, relaxing and friendly. All rooms have private facilities
and of course good food is very high on our agenda. Breaks are full board, unless otherwise stated including packed lunches.
