LOCALBIRDER - Heybridge GP's and Chigborough Lakes - Wednesday 27th March 2013A good day down at Heybridge with excellent numbers of waders along the estuary which included over 1500 BLACK-TAILED GODWITS and around 130 BAR-TAILED GODWITS along with over 200 AVOCET and smaller numbers of KNOT, DUNLIN, GREY PLOVER, OYSTERCATCHER, TURNSTONE and CURLEW.
A male MARSH HARRIER flew through flushing all the waders whilst on the pits we watched three GOLDENEYE, TUFTED DUCK, POCHARD and a few LITTLE GREBE.
We visited the Lock Tearooms where a cuppa and snack were very welcome! Walking towards Mill Beach was a little quiet although we had good views of WIGEON and TEAL.
After lunch we visited Chigborough Lakes, where we had a muddy but enjoyable walk. A few common wildfowl were noted on the lakes and overhead we heard a COMMON BUZZARD but saw a male SPARROWHAWK dashing through the trees. A quick diversion to Lofts Farm proved successful with a LITTLE OWL and MISTLE & SONG THRUSHES in the field.
Back on the reserve it was a little quiet although we did see GOLDCREST, LONG-TAILED TIT and plenty of ROBINS and WRENS.
Despite bitter winds, we had a great day and it was great to see the sun for a change!
