LOCALBIRDER – THE NAZE & HOLLAND HAVEN – Wednesday 3rd April 2013

A great but blooming cold day in NE Essex started with a cracking adult MEDITERRANEAN GULL in the carpark at The Naze and four MISTLE THRUSHES on the open grassy area. The bushes were rather quiet but 9 SISKINS flying south provided some compensation.

On the flooded marshes a few AVOCETS hunkered down from the cold wind and at least two female MARSH HARRIERS flew over the scrub. We headed back to the cafe where a hot cuppa was very welcome.

The afternoon was spent at Holland Haven where a couple of FIELDFARE were in the carpark and sadly we found a dead BARN OWL that looked like it had died of starvation. On the scrape small numbers of waders were seen including TURNSTONE, BLACK-TAILED GODWIT, RINGED PLOVER, DUNLIN, REDSHANK and SNIPE. A SPARROWHAWK flushed a small group of WIGEON and a scan through the gulls provided us with a brief sighting of a 3rd winter CASPIAN GULL which soon drifted off north, although an adult YELLOW-LEGGED GULL did hang around for us all to view.
