BRECKS BIRDING - Saturday 6th April 2013

Our day started well with KINGFISHER, GREAT CRESTED GREBE and SPARROWHAWK before even leaving Colchester! The Brecks once again produced the goods with our first site giving us a young male GOSHAWK, 3 RED KITES, 15 COMMON BUZZARDS, 2 WOODLARK and 2 CURLEW before 10.00am.

Late morning was spent wandering around various sites where we saw several NUTHATCH, MARSH TIT, LESSER REDPOLL, SISKIN, COMMA BUTTERFLY and even more COMMON BUZZARDS. Two BRIMSTONE were enjoying the sunshine during the afternoon as well as TREECREEPER, REDWINGS, MARSH TIT, NUTHATCH, drumming GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKERS and singing male FIRECREST.

As the afternoon progressed we spent some time in the south, where a CHIFFCHAFF was singing - hooray, spring had arrived! A female LESSER REDPOLL fed and a pair of PINTAIL were on the scrape. The day was rounded off nicely with a single STONE CURLEW and a pair of EGYPTIAN GEESE.
