LOCALBIRDER - MINSMERE RSPB - Wednesday 12th June 2013

A superb day spent at RSPB Minsmere! We began by watching an adult STONE CURLEW at a site close to the visitor centre, before moving round to the scrape hides. 2 SPOONBILLS fed together and other birds included 2 MEDITERRANEAN GULLS, KITTIWAKES, TURNSTONE, 40 BLACK-TAILED GODWITS, SANDWICH TERNS and a cracking RED KITE flying south.

On our way back to the centre we saw a juvenile GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER being fed by an adult at a nest hole and after lunch in the sunshine we headed off to check out the reedbeds. As soon as we entered Bittern Hide a BITTERN flew past and then another a short time later. Then a third Bittern was spotted right in front of us and after a while we could see it booming!

As well as the BITTERN, we watched 5 HOBBIES feeding close to the hide as well as a FOX and several MARSH HARRIERS. At Island Mere hide we saw yet another BITTERN but little else, so returned to the centre for a well deserved drink before leaving for home.
