LOCALBIRDER – THE NAZE & HOLLAND HAVEN – WEDNESDAY 9th OCTOBER 2013

We met at the Naze at 9am and the first part of the walk produced good numbers of CHIFFCHAFF, whilst offshore a winter plumaged RAZORBILL slowly swam southwards. BLACKCAPS, WHEATEAR and REED BUNTINGS were notable sightings in the northern area and it was good to bump into Simon Cox who was bird ringing and showed us several CHIFFCHAFF, SONG THRUSH and BLUE and LONG-TAILED TITS in the hand.

After a welcome cuppa we had lunch and headed down to Holland Haven. An adult MEDITERRANEAN GULL flew over and from the hide were five LITTLE STINTS, DUNLIN, RUFF and a single SNIPE. An adult YELLOW-LEGGED GULL was on the scrape and at the sluice, a colour ringed HERRING GULL which was originally ringed at Orfordness in Suffolk.

A MERLIN came in off the sea late afternoon and along the seafront were up to five WHEATEAR, a great end to the day!
