Simon Wood is a born and bred Essex boy who was raised in the County. Having lived so close to the Essex coast all his life his favourite birding locations are not surprisingly, all along the shores and estuaries. His local patch is the Maldon area, where he lives and where his patch list is now 214 species with self-found birds including Baikal Teal, Ring-necked Duck and Lesser Yellowlegs. He served on the Essex Birdwatching Society Committee, is currently a Vice President and he co-edited the Essex Bird Report for several years.

He is the author of the Birds of Essex (2007). His travels have taken him across Britain and Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America, Asia and Australia.

In addition to birds, he has a keen interest in butterflies and moths, dragonflies and hoverflies; in fact pretty much anything that flies!
